It will soon be Easter, that time of year when Christians remember the story of how Jesus died on a cross and then rose from the dead…all for you and me! However, just one week before being condemned to die, the people had been celebrating that the Messiah, their King, had come. They thought he was going to kick out the Romans, but that wasn’t what he came to do at all. Jesus came to take the punishment for all the bad things we do, so that we could become part of his family and members of his kingdom.

When Jesus fulfilled all that was necessary for us, the Bible tells us that God the Father put Jesus in charge. Paul writes in Philippians that, “When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” That means that Jesus is our King and we need to serve him.

Family goal:
What is one way your family can show that Jesus is your King this week?
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]

Weekly verses:
Zechariah 9:9, NLT – “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.”

Family activities:
• Colour / design a crown for Jesus
• Make a palm branch like the ones people put on the road for Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem, declaring that he was the Messiah King. [story on Sunday for YEAH! Church]

Prayer:
Thank you, God that Jesus did all you wanted him to in order that we could be part of your family. Help me to always honour Jesus as my King…putting the things he wants first, not mine. Thank you that I can be part of your Kingdom.
