There is nothing we can do to be good enough to go to heaven; but the good news is, we don’t have to. Jesus made it possible for anyone who believes in him to go to heaven. But that doesn’t mean it is easy to follow Jesus. Followers of Jesus are required to sign over their plans, possessions, their time and abilities to him.
When we decide that we want to take Jesus up on his offer, it means that we are no longer the ones in charge. If we want to receive the reward of heaven given to those who are Jesus’ followers, then we need to sign over ownership of our lives to him. We can’t buy our way into heaven, but we also can’t keep anything from Jesus—like the old saying goes, there’s no way to ‘have your cake and eat it too.’ We need to put God in charge of our lives, which means living in a way that pleases him.
Family goal:
When we understand how much God loves us, that he’s good and we can trust him, it is much easier to give him control over our lives. Identify one way that your family can grow in your love for God and put it to practice. ______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]
Weekly verses:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NLT – “19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”
Family activities:
• Colour the picture of children following Jesus.
• Work through the maze activity sheet…can you follow your way to Jesus?
• On a mirror, write the words, “I belong to Jesus” as a daily reminder.
Prayer:
Thank you, God that Jesus made it possible for me to go to be in heaven someday. Help me to always be grateful and live my life for you not just for myself. Help me remember that it is always best to let you be in charge!
