Week 37: When People Misunderstand

God had a special task for Paul & Barnabas…to travel to places to teach about Jesus. The Church in Antioch prayed for Paul and Barnabas and then they set sail. They visited many places. Some of the people were very interested to hear what they had to say...while others just got mad!
In the town of Lystra, Paul saw a man that had been born unable to walk, so he healed him. The people of the town had never seen anything like this before and decided that Paul & Barnabas must be gods, specifically Zeus and Hermes. They decided to make a sacrifice in their honour.
This upset Paul and Barnabas very much. They stopped the people by convincing them that they were just regular men like them. But now instead of trying to worship them, the people decided to kill them. They stoned Paul and dragged his body out of the city, thinking that he was dead.
But some believed Paul & Barnabas’ message and, as they gathered around Paul, he got up and went back into the town. Paul and Barnabas left the next day to find another town to tell the wonderful news about Jesus. They never gave up even when they encountered people who refused to believe.

• Together as a family, share stories of times when God has helped you do something that was difficult.

Prayer:
Thank you, God, for Paul and Barnabas’ example. You wanted them to become missionaries and share the Good News about Jesus and they did. You may not ask us to leave our country to teach others about Jesus, but you do want us to share the news about Jesus with others, too. Help us to be brave and not give up…just like Paul and Barnabas.
