Peter was arrested and things didn’t look good for him. Herod had killed the Apostle James and when he saw how much it pleased the Jewish leaders, he put Peter in prison too. It is likely that Peter would soon be killed just as James had been. The Christians did the only thing they could for Peter…they prayed that God would rescue him!
And guess what? God did! He sent an angel to help Peter escape from the prison. Peter was awakened by the angel; he had been sleeping chained to two guards. The chains fell off, he got dressed and the gate to the prison automatically swung open as he followed the angel outside. Is there wonder he thought he was dreaming? But then when the angel left, he realized it was real!
The first thing Peter did was to go to Mary’s home where many believers were praying for him. When he knocked on the gate, Rhoda the servant girl recognized his voice, but in her excitement ran to tell the others rather than letting him in. But when she told them, no one believed her.
Peter kept knocking and eventually the others went to the door to investigate and discovered that God had indeed answered their prayers and done the impossible…he had rescued Peter from prison!
Family goal:
• We know that God answers our prayers when they agree with his good plans. What could you pray about this week?
______________________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]
Weekly verse:
1 John 5:14, NLT – “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.”
Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Peter and Rhoda.
• Help Peter escape through the maze.
• Write the Bible verse on strips of paper, then using the strips, create a chain to enact the Bible story.
Prayer:
Thank you, God that you answer our prayers. You don’t answer our selfish prayers, but when we pray for the good of others and for ourselves, we will often see you give us what we ask for. Help us to pray in a way that pleases you!
