Week 38: You Cannot Earn Your Way to Heaven

Some of the Jews who had become Christians thought that non-Jews had to become Jews before God would accept them. They believed that a Christian had to follow the Jewish laws. But Paul and Barnabas were adamant. Belief in Jesus was all that was necessary to be included in God’s family.

As Jesus’ followers we should obey him, but not so that he’ll let us into heaven. We obey Jesus to show him how much we love him and how grateful we are for what he has done for us.

If you wanted to tell someone about how to become part of Jesus’ family, how would you explain it to them?

Family goal:
• What is a good thing you can do to show Jesus how grateful you are for making it possible for you to be part of his family?

Weekly verse:
Romans 10:9, NLT – “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Jesus.
• Do you believe in Jesus? Have you decided to follow him and obey him? It’s an important question.
• Make a cross necklace or keychain to remind yourself how much you have to be thankful for Jesus.

Thank you, God, that my efforts to be good aren’t what will ensure I can go to heaven. I make lots of mistakes. Please forgive me. Thank you, that I can know for certain that you do because Jesus paid the price for the bad stuff I do. Thank you for your forgiveness and for including me in your family.
