“Just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.” (Matthew 7:20, NLT)
Just because someone goes to church, or has a Bible, or even talks about God, does not mean that they are a Christian. The only way to truly be able to identify someone as being a follower of Jesus is to watch their actions—do they act in ways that are loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, gentle, good, faithful and self-controlled? When God’s Holy Spirit lives in a person, He helps them become like Jesus, who was all of these things and more! Our words are not enough, but must be backed up by action. God doesn’t just want us to talk about Him, He wants us to show everyone that we know Him by the way we behave.
Think about it...
• Being a Christian means that you literally follow Jesus. How do we do that?
• Jesus was loving and compassionate. How can I be loving and compassionate?
• Jesus always obeyed God. How can I obey God?
• Jesus knew that His life was to be spent serving others. How can we serve others and show generosity?
Prayer: Thank you, God, that you tell us how to live in a way that pleases you. You don’t just want us trying to ‘fake’ our way to heaven…you want us to allow the Holy Spirit to change and do good things, just like Jesus did. Help us put our faith to action!
