After Paul and Silas left Philippi, they continued to travel from town to town. They ended up in a place called Thessalonica and people began gathering around Paul and Silas to learn about Jesus. But this made the Jews jealous…they wanted the people to listen to them! So they started a riot to cause trouble for Paul and Silas. Thankfully, Paul and Silas escaped and ended up travelling to Berea.
Again, Paul and Silas began teaching about Jesus and the Bereans did something the people in Thessalonica hadn’t. After they heard Paul and Silas teach, they would go to their homes and study more on the subject to see whether or not Paul and Silas were telling them the truth…and many came to believe them and followed Jesus!
When someone teaches us something that we didn’t know about God and His Word before, it is important for us to be good students and check it out. It doesn’t make sense to reject the truth just because we’ve never heard it before and it doesn’t make sense to believe something new just because someone tells us. It is good to be like the Bereans!
Family goal:
• Is there a topic that you don’t understand and would like to know more about? Try doing some research and see if you can find some answers!

[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]
Weekly verse:
Acts 17:11, NLT – “And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.”
Family activities:
• Colour the picture of the jealous Jewish leaders. Draw Paul preaching in the picture.
• Studying the Scripture (the Bible) is a good thing for us all to do. Make a bookmark to use as you read.
• The Bereans spoke and studied the Greek language. Try and copy their alphabet.
Prayer:
Thank you, God, that we can be like the Bereans. You want us to study the Bible and learn more about you each and every day. Help us to understand what we read and find ways to explain it to others.
