“Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” (Luke 6:31, NLT)

God is serious about us treating others well—with kindness, respect and generosity—just like we want to be treated. God loves all people; He doesn’t have any favourites. God made the first people in His image—with the ability to choose, to love Him and to have a relationship with Him. That’s why He loves each one of us the same—which is more than we will ever be able to imagine. Because God loves and cares for each person, He expects us to love others the same way. This might mean standing up for someone who is being bullied. It might mean helping your elderly or sick neighbour with their yard work. It could be donating food to a foodbank, providing a place to sleep for someone who needs a home or just being a friend. There is no limit to the ways that we can show kindness, respect and generosity to others. And best of all, God loves when we love others and treat them the way we want others to treat us.

Think about it...
• God wants us to treat others well. Why is this so important to God?
• Sometimes it can be hard to be nice to people, because they aren’t nice to us. Does God still expect us to treat them kindly?
• There are many ways to be kind. Can you think of someone who needs help? What could you do today and over the next days to treat them the way you would like to be treated if you were in their situation?
• God loves us, even when we aren’t being particularly loveable. How can we show God that we love Him too?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that you love all people—even those we might have difficulty loving. Help us to find ways to be kind and treat others the way we want to be treated, not because they are kind to us, but because you want us to.
