“Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.” (Exodus 3:10)

One day Moses had taken his father-in-law’s flocks near Mount Sinai to find pasture. While there he saw a crazy thing…there was a bush that was on fire, but it didn’t burn up. Moses decided he had to go and check it out. As he got closer, however, a voice came from the bush…it was God telling Moses that he was standing on holy ground and he should take off his sandals. Moses instantly obeyed and he kept his eyes down…he was afraid to even look! But God continued to talk to Moses and tell him of a special job He had for him to do. He wanted Moses to go back to Egypt to help the Israelites to escape from their slavery.

How did Moses respond? No way! The thought of going back to Egypt scared him to death and he came up with all sorts of excuses… “What if the people don’t believe you sent me. I’m no good with making speeches. I can’t do this!” God gave Moses some signs to prove that He had sent him—his staff could turn into a snake and then back again and he could cause his hand to become covered with a skin disease and then back to healthy. But still Moses resisted and God actually became angry with him! But God is also patient, even when annoyed, and so offered to send Aaron, Moses’ brother, along to help. Moses finally agreed.

Think about it...
• One day Moses saw a burning bush and he was curious about it. What would you think if you saw a burning bush?
• God spoke to Moses through the bush. What message did He give Moses?
• Moses did not want to go back to Egypt. What excuses did he give God?
• Sometimes obeying God can be scary, but just as with Moses, God will help us. How did God show Moses He would help him?

Prayer: Thank you, God, for being patient with Moses. Even when he doubted that what you said was true, you knew better than Moses what was to come. Help us to rely on you especially when you ask us to do difficult things.
