"Doing Life with Jesus”

2022 Theme verses:
Colossians 2:6-7, NLT – “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Jesus Obeyed His Parents
Luke 2:41-52, NLT – “41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

Jesus knew he was special—he was God’s Son! But that didn’t mean he didn’t have to obey Mary and Joseph, his parents. At twelve, his family took a trip to Jerusalem and while there Jesus went to the Temple. He understood that the Temple was God’s House and he wanted to spend time there. But his parents didn’t realize this and left the city without him. After travelling for a day, they realized that Jesus wasn’t with the group and travelled back to search for him. It took them three days to find him and by the time they did they had become increasingly worried for him. What if something bad had happened?

When they found him, they couldn’t understand why Jesus had left them to go to the Temple in the first place. And he didn’t understand why they had to look for him…after all, shouldn’t it be obvious that he would want to spend time in his Father’s house. Jesus and his parents had different ideas about how he should want to spend his time, but he was quick to obey them regardless. When they told him it was time to go, he went and he continued to obey them in their home in Nazareth.

Engage:
• Even as a child of twelve, Jesus knew he was God’s Son. Why do you think he still needed to obey his parents, Mary and Joseph?
• Jesus had wanted to spend time with his Father, God. Why do we want to spend time with our parents?
• Mary and Joseph became very worried when they couldn’t find Jesus. Why do you think they became anxious?
• Jesus grew up in Nazareth with his parents, his brothers and sisters. In what ways might it have hard for Jesus to grow up in a family? What do you think his life would have been like?

Weekly verse:
1 Peter 3:8, NLT – “All of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.”

Prayer – Dear God, thank you that Jesus can understand us, because he was one of us. He knows that it isn’t always easy to be good and to obey our parents, but he was and showed us that we can be too. Help me to always be respectful and live to be like Jesus.
