Part of Jesus’ ministry was doing miracles. He could heal people of their illnesses, raise people from the dead, and demons had to obey him when he commanded them. Many of Jesus’ miracles convinced people that he was more than just a man—he was also God. In fact, it was a miracle that convinced four of his disciples, who would later be named ‘apostles,’ to follow Jesus—Simon (Peter), Andrew, James and John.
These four men were fishing partners, but one night, after working the whole night, they hadn’t caught a thing…not one single fish. Jesus told Simon to again put his net down into the water, but he hesitated. Sure, Jesus was a good teacher, but he was no fisherman…everyone knows that you don’t catch fish in the middle of the day. But, out of respect for Jesus, Simon did as he was told…and ended up catching so many fish that his net began breaking and they had to call for their partners to help. They filled two boats full of fish!
Simon knew that this was no coincidence or just a lucky catch. He knew Jesus had done a miracle to convince him that Jesus was more than just a good teacher. So, when Jesus told Simon, Andrew, James and John to follow him and become his disciples, they didn’t hesitate. They had seen with their own eyes what could only be a miracle from God and they were convinced!
Family goal:
Jesus’ miracle proved he was more than just a man. We may not do miracles, but we can prove that we are his followers by ____________________
[Be sure to pick a measurable goal involving a task so that children will know when they have completed it.]
Weekly verses:
John 20:30-31, NLT – “The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book [the Gospel of John]. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.”
Family activities:
• Colour the picture of Jesus and the disciples with a full net of fish.
• Make your colouring page into a puzzle by cutting it apart and then reassemble.
• Play ‘How many fish?’ guessing game. Take turns putting varying amounts of goldfish crackers into a cup and see who can guess the closest to the number of fish in the cup (good counting game for younger children and estimation skills for older children).
Prayer:
Thank you, God that we can know that Jesus was more than just a person because of all the amazing miracles he did. Help us to see the good things you do for us…the every day and the miraculous!
