“Hezekiah did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done.” (2 Kings 18:3)
The northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah had some pretty horrible rulers, but not all of them were bad. In fact, King Hezekiah was one of the best kings that Judah ever had…he was as good as David and wanted to please God. His father had done some pretty rotten things, but Hezekiah reversed many of the bad things that his father, King Ahaz, had done. He tore down all the places and idols that people worshiped false gods and he encouraged everyone to get right with God.
One day he became very sick and the prophet Isaiah told him he was going to die soon. Hezekiah, who is only 39 years old, cries and asks God to please let him live longer. God hears his prayer and let him live for another 15 years. He showed King Hezekiah that he could count on his promise by making the sun go back in time!
Think about it...
• Hezekiah’s father, King Ahaz, had been a wicked king. Why do you think Hezekiah was different?
• Hezekiah wanted everyone to love God as much as he did. What did he do?
• Hezekiah became very sick, but God promised him that he could live for 15 more years. How did God prove to Hezekiah that he wouldn’t die?
Prayer: Thank you, God, for Hezekiah’s example. It doesn’t matter what our past is like, or who our family is, you allow us to have a relationship with you. We can always begin fresh.
