“So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the New Quarter of Jerusalem to consult with the prophet Huldah.” (2 Kings 22:14a)

King Josiah was one of the really good kings of Judah. His grandfather and father had done many wrong things, but when Josiah became king at the age of eight, he began to clean up the mess they had made. He got rid of many of the idols and repaired God’s Temple. While the Temple was being repaired, they found the lost book of the Law. Josiah was very excited to have this book, but when he heard what it said he realized that the nation of Judah was in big trouble. They hadn’t been obeying God like they were supposed to.

He sent some men to the prophet Huldah and she explained what was going to happen. God was going to bring about the punishments that were listed in the book of the Law on the nation for disobeying him, but because Josiah loved and served God with his whole heart, it would not happen while he was king. The men told King Josiah what Huldah had told them and Josiah determined to help the people worship God even more than before. He believed Huldah who gave him God’s message and continued to obey God all his life.

Think about it...
• King Josiah wanted to please God and repaired the Temple. What did they find at the Temple?
• The book of the Law contained God’s message to his people. Why did King Josiah tear his robes when he heard it read to him?
• King Josiah needed some advice. Who did he ask to advise him?
• Huldah told the king what God told her. What was her message?

Prayer: Thank you, God, for giving Judah a wise king who knew to seek good advice. Thank you for Huldah and how she was willing to deliver your message to the king. Help us to be like Huldah—always listening to you and willing to tell people the truth even when it’s hard.
