“Ahab did more to provoke the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, than any of the other kings of Israel before him.” (1 Kings 16:33)

After the kingdom was divided into Israel in the North and Judah in the South, many kings ruled each of the kingdoms. The Northern kings were for the most part a really bad group, but their worst king was Ahab, with an equally terrible wife, Jezebel. They rejected God and worshipped Baal and Ashtoreth. The prophet Elijah risked his life on more than one occasion to try to set them straight…and ended up having to flee for his life.

One of the stories in the Bible that shows just how bad these two were involves one of their neighbours, Naboth. He had a really nice vineyard that King Ahab tried to buy. But when Naboth refused to sell it, Ahab threw a total pout. Queen Jezebel decided to take matters into her own hands and paid some people to lie about Naboth and then she had him murdered. She then confiscated the property for her husband. Not a good example for a king and queen to set. It is stories like this that make them amongst some of the worst rulers that the Northern kingdom had.

Think about it...
• King Ahab & Queen Jezebel had no real interest in God. Who did they worship?
• One of their neighbours had a very nice vineyard. What happened when he refused to sell it to Ahab?
• Ahab & Jezebel are known for being some of the worst leaders that the Northern kingdom had. What kind of reputation do you want to be remembered for?

Prayer: Thank you, God, that the Bible contains stories that remind us of the danger of refusing to follow you. King Ahab and Queen Jezebel were not good leaders; thank you that you gave them chances to change, even though they didn’t. Help us to not ignore you like they did.
