“The men of Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal. Don’t abandon your servants now!’ they pleaded. ‘Come at once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the hill country have joined forces to attack us.’” (Joshua 10:6)
When the southern kings of the land of Canaan learned that the Gibeonites had made an alliance with the Israelites they decided to attack the town of Gibeon. They didn’t want to see other people helping the Israelites to take over the land. When they were preparing to attack, the Gibeonites sent a message to Joshua. “Don’t abandon us…come to our rescue!” And so, Joshua took the army to Gibeon to rescue the people.
They chased the enemy army away. God even helped by sending an incredible hail storm that worked to destroy the army. But it took time and they were running out of light, so Joshua prayed that God would make the sun and moon stand still in the sky…and God made it happen!
Think about it...
• The Gibeonites had tricked the Israelites into making an alliance with them. When they got into trouble what did they do?
• Joshua was true to his word and he took the whole Israelite army to Gibeon. What happened?
• Joshua didn’t want any of the enemy to escape during the night. What did he ask God to do for him?
• God made the sun and moon stay in one place. Can God still do those kinds of miracles?
Prayer: Thank you, God, for answering Joshua’s prayers. Nothing is too hard for you to do! Help me to always trust you.
